Climate Smart Community Outreach

Tuesday, October 11th ● 7:00pm – 9:00pm Community Center, 3 Veterans Drive

New Paltz wants your input!

We want to know your vision for the community to help us design a plan for a better tomorrow.

In the next few months, the Town and Village of New Paltz are working on developing a Community Climate Action Plan. A climate action plan is a detailed and strategic framework for measuring, planning, and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and related climatic impacts. Communities design and utilize climate action plans as roadmaps for making informed decisions and understanding where and how to achieve the largest and most cost-effective emissions reductions that are in alignment with other municipal goals.

Why Participate?
This is a great way to voice your opinion regarding the things you care about. We need to know what you and our municipalities can do to combat the climate crisis.

COME OUT TO VOICE YOUR OPINION AND THOUGHTS REGARDING:
• Energy
• Resiliency and Adaptation
• Waste Reduction/Recycling
• Transportation and Mobility
• Smart Growth/Land Use

Public Meetings & Videoconferencing // 9/13 ZBA Meeting Cancelled

Remote Meetings

Governor Hochul did not renew the state of emergency related to COVID-19, which has now expired as of 12:00 a.m. today. With it expires the permission to have board members attend meetings remotely, except in cases of emergency, and only if pre-authorized by the legislative body.

The first two sections from Local Law 1 of 2022, passed at the June 6, 2022 Village Board meeting, allowing for videoconferencing:

    1. Members of the public body shall be physically present at any meeting of such public body unless such member is unable to be physically present at any such meeting location due to extraordinary circumstances due to
      1. disability;
      2. illness;
      3. caregiving responsibilities;
      4. any other significant or unexpected factor or event which precludes a member’s physical attendance at such meeting;

The above conditions are grounds for remote participation by board members. Board members who wish to meet remotely must give notice in advance of a public meeting.

    1. A public body may, in its discretion, use videoconferencing to conduct its meetings, provided that a minimum number of members are present to fulfill the public body’s quorum requirement in the same physical location or locations where the public can attend, and all other requirements set forth hereafter have been met;

Videoconferencing may be used, provided that a minimum number of members attend the public meeting in-person. The full text of the local law authorizing videoconferencing may be found here.

Locations for Village public meetings will be posted.  Please contact the Clerk or the Mayor’s office if you have any questions.

Ribbon Cutting – Green Infrastructure Project

Please join us on Tuesday, September 13, at 10am, at Mohonk & Elting Avenues in New Paltz, across from St. Joseph’s Church.

We are hosting a ribbon cutting at the intersection of Mohonk and Elting Avenues on Tuesday, to thank all those involved in our multifaceted project, which is part of our initiative to source more safe and affordable drinking water in New Paltz. Work is nearly complete on the Hasbrouck Park expansion at this intersection, which offsets the alienation of parkland near Moriello Pool for the creation of two new municipal drinking water wells.

GRANT PROPOSAL OUTLINE

GOALS:

    • Culture & Community
    • Harm Reduction & Human Services
    • Childcare
    • Employment & Education
    • Development in the NBR Zone

New Paltz is already known for being an amazing place to live, work, and play.

Throughout New Paltz’s rich history we have been ahead of the curve, as innovative pioneers culturally, educationally, politically, socially, and more recently, technologically. We want to be a cutting-edge model for 21st century New York State living; socially responsible, with a focus on equity, while responding to climate change through green-minded development. We have protected and enhanced open spaces. We seek a desirable quality of life for residents with access to affordable housing and a local job market offering wide-ranging livelihoods that align and benefit from our college town setting. Our goal is for New Paltz to maximize its potential while remaining a cherished, beloved, and attractive destination for residents and visitors alike.

For the DRI application New Paltz’s focus area is bound by the Rail Trail, North Chestnut Street, SUNY & Hasbrouck Park, and the Middle School & Youth Program.

We are tasked with integrating different needs and rhythms of stakeholders who live or visit because New Paltz:

  1. is an animated college town with a walkable Main Street and locally-owned businesses
  2. offers world-class outdoor recreation and trails that attract regional and international visitors
  3. hosts one of New York State’s top public colleges
  4. enjoys a vibrant and engaged local full-time community

But we need support as a host focused on maintaining quality of life for our cross-section of families, seniors, students, and young professionals.

Though our community is grateful for the public and private investments we have already benefited from, we are at an inflection point. We need to continue to balance supporting ALL community members while making New Paltz feel welcoming and simultaneously manage change and growth.

Working together, a dedicated group of Village employees, and community residents will pursue grant funding to implement improvement projects in the Village. Grant funds will be used to support projects that align with New Paltz’s culture and future plans.

Please share this information.
